Manford “Bud” Estes, of Marietta, passed away February 24, 2016. He was born in Endicott, New York to parents Marie and Manford Estes on July 22, 1955. Bud graduated in 1974 from Newark Valley High School in Newark Valley, NY, where he met his best friend and wife of 40 years, Karen. His passion for helping people led him to achieve an Associate’s degree in Respiratory Therapy from Syracuse Upstate Medical University. His degree led him to a lifelong career in healthcare where he established many professional and personal relationships.
Bud was an outdoorsman who enjoyed hiking and fishing throughout the southeast. He was very involved in the Boy Scouts of America as a leader in Lakeland, Florida as well as St. Simons Island, Georgia, and had many fond memories rooted in exploring the Okefenokee Swamp with his boys and the scouts. More recently, he could often be found hiking in Sope Creek, the East Cobb Park, or on Kennesaw Mountain with his beloved dog, Shiloh.
In his spare time, Bud was a handyman. He enjoyed helping with Habitat for Humanity and participating in the Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church’s “Great Day of Service.” He was always willing to lend a hand to whomever needed it. He also enjoyed watching the Georgia Bulldogs, often overshadowing even his sons’ passion for the team. If he wasn’t watching the Dawgs, he could be found watching his second passion: Westerns, or listening to classic rock n’ roll.
Above all, family was very important to Bud. From family gatherings barbecuing Cornell Chicken and spiedies, to late night card playing and fishing on the Indian River in Florida and the many lakes and rivers of Georgia, Bud will certainly be missed by all that loved and knew him as a friend, brother, father, grandpapa, and husband. Bud is survived by: wife, Karen Estes; sons, Matthew (Pamela) Estes, and Stephen (Ashley) Estes; grandchildren, Zoe, Joseph Oliver, Everly, and Ivy Estes; sisters, Sharon (George) Zurko and Dawn (Ron) Kiefer; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by: father, Manford Estes; and mother, Marie Estes; and sister, Nancy (Tom) Morgan.
